Vigilant® has expanded its monitoring capabilities to support residential Air-Source Heat Pumps (ASHP), allowing GeoFease to track the real-time efficiency of these units through its platform. The system not only monitors performance but also calculates energy usage, cost savings, and CO2 reductions in real time compared to conventional systems. By analyzing enthalpy and electrical energy data, Vigilant computes the real-time Coefficient of Performance (COP), giving homeowners a comprehensive view of their ASHP’s efficiency and environmental impact.

The integrated system includes a smart logger that captures critical data points such as temperature, amperage, refrigerant pressure, and voltage. The logger transmits this data to the GeoFease server for detailed computation and analysis, providing precise insights into the performance of ASHP units. By monitoring these parameters, Vigilant helps homeowners optimize their system’s efficiency and make informed decisions for greater energy savings and sustainability. Additionally, the system enables heat pump technicians to perform remote diagnostics, which significantly reduces the need for onsite service calls.

This integration supports an ongoing study that compares the operational COP of Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) with ASHP systems in cold climates. As the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Government of Canada advocate for cold climate ASHP technology, this study provides essential data to evaluate their effectiveness in harsh winter conditions. The findings will help determine whether cold climate ASHPs offer a viable strategy for reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions or if GSHPs present a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for these environments.
